A fascination with object design was the source of inspiration for me in the early 1990’s when I began creating hand built, small mixed media sculptures that could be mounted on a wall.
Bird imagery soon became an attractive theme, since I could challenge myself consistently with various ways to represent beaks, wings, and legs. Early birds often included select found objects which added interest to my work through their provenance, unique shapes, colors, and textures. Eventually, I tried using ink, employing hatch marks commonly found in illustration. This aspect endured and has become a signature feature. Each sculpture is hand formed with a plaster/cellulose substance and then embellished with acrylic paint and archival ink.
Collected by hundreds of art enthusiasts throughout the USA and abroad in cities such as Singapore, Madrid, London, Sydney, and Toronto, over 560 birds have been showcased in exhibits and art fairs in the Washington, DC area and at Maison 10, located in mid-town Manhattan. More than 50 birds are included in the permanent collection at The Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Fairfax and Alexandria, Virginia.
Radius Gallery located in Missoula, Montana, has exhibited my paintings and birds since the summer of 2024, with a new exhibit scheduled for the summer of 2026. For those of you who are not able to visit the gallery in person, please note that any currently available work can be purchased online through the Radius Gallery website.
